Located within fashionable Queen Street in Woollahra, Ginkgo Leaf is a new retail store specialising in contemporary, artisan Japanese home wares. The client was interested in a gallery-type environment as a platform to showcase the home wares, whilst ensuring a level of warmth in the interior at the same time. With a tight budget and heritage restrictions that required the fitout to be structurally detached from the tenancy, the design direction led to the creation of freestanding display elements that firmly place the home wares as the centrepiece within the interior.
The main display wall uses translucent surfaces and backlighting to highlight and display the wares, whilst an island display comprising a free-form "plinth" made from black Kraft paper with timber display discs at differing levels creates an interesting counterpoint to the more structured display wall.
