Located in a small row of terraces and surrounded by semi-industrial buildings, the existing single level dwelling accommodates 3 bedrooms and a semi-open plan living, dining and kitchen area. Designed for a couple, the proposal retains the existing bedrooms and creates a new rear pavilion which accommodates the primary living areas within an open plan configuration. Privacy and solar control were key drivers in the architecture which creates a better connection with the rear yard and takes advantage of its northern orientation.
The new additions also provide a counterpoint to the existing retained areas of the house as well as a response to the semi-industrial surrounds. The proposed material palette includes polished concrete floors, birch-veneered plywood ceilings, carrara marble benchtops and polyurethane joinery.
