As the first phase of the revitalization works to the Powerhouse Museum since its opening in 1988, the winning design scheme from the collaborative efforts of Toland, Shigeru Ban Architects (Japan) and Trigger introduces a new appreciation of the museum’s architecture and puts in place changes that will support and reinforce the museum’s new philosophical and physical objectives to transform itself into a more ‘open’ museum. Core elements of the design proposal include more temporary exhibition space, activates key frontages, improves the entry-exit experience, strategizes a new visitor circulation ‘blueprint’ and repositions the retail/café elements. The project is currently under construction.
